How long do dental implants take to heal?

How long do dental implants take to heal?

The dental implant process happens in multiple steps which means that more than one healing stage may be needed. Healing times will also depend on how many teeth are being replaced, your health, and other factors.

Here’s a little about what will happen in between the procedure and recovery during each stage of your dental implant treatment. After these steps are successfully completed, you will be finished with your dental implant treatment!

If you need bone grafting before the implant can be placed, a waiting period of approximately four to six months will be required before the implant portion of your treatment process can begin. Grafting is required in cases where the patient is lacking healthy bone in the area where the implant will be placed.

When an extraction is required ahead of the implant procedure, there will also be a healing period necessary. Thanks to new advances in dentistry, dentists can often place the implants at the same time as the extractions, so that there is no double healing time. Depending on your health, this step can take around a week to heal.

Once the bone has integrated with the implant metal (between four and six months), the second part of the dental implant procedure can take place.

This is when your dentist will attach an abutment to your dental implant, to which either an artificial tooth (a dental cap) or denture will be attached.
